Wind Rose plots for West Texas Mesonet data are based on the standard 5-minute observation. The official anemometer is the R.M. Young Wind Monitor based at a height of 10-meters AGL. The 5-minute observation consists of the average wind speed and direction with a peak instantaneous 3-second gust (during the 5-minute observation period). All wind speed data are recorded in meters per second (m/s; 1 m/s = 2.237 mph). Calm winds are recorded as 0.00 m/s in the archive. A basic quality control procedure has been performed on the dataset. All data that are considered bad (due to instrument failure) have been removed from the archive. Wind data during winter time precipitation events may be considered suspect due to icing on the anemometer. These data have not been removed and may impact the average wind speeds for our northern stations.

The number of total observations used for each station will vary depending on how long the station has been in existence. This will have large impacts on mean wind speed and direction. Click here to find out more information about your particluar site.
