Severe downburst winds impacted parts of Scurry County, Texas late in the evening of June 17th, 2008. The WTM station 3 miles east of Snyder recorded a peak gust to 82 mph at 11:40 pm CDT. The initial winds with the outflow passage were relatively weak with the damaging winds directly under the heavy precipitation. The following is a partial list of the mesonet data for the Snyder 3E (SNYD) station.
The small values in the solar radiation data are from lightning. There was a lot of cloud-to-ground lightning ahead of the storm which usually does not show up in average 5-minute pyranometer data. The continuous cloud-to-cloud lightning (anvil crawlers) behind the heavy rain often gives small readings in the pyranometer data.
The following static KLBB Level III radar image is from 17/1132 pm CDT (18/0432Z). The heavy precipitation core was just approaching the station from the north. Click on thumbnail for larger image.
