A narrow line of storms moved across West Texas during the evening hours of Febuary 8th, 2009. Embedded vortices in the line generated isolated severe wind gusts across the South Plains region. A larger area of damaging winds was reported in the southern Texas Panhandle near Amarillo. Rainfall totals of over 1/2 inch were common in the central South Plains region.

The following time-history plot from the West Texas Mesonet 915 MHz radar profiler at Reese Center. Image generated on FSL/MADIS profiler software. 60-meter gate spacing on the profiler that was optimized to try and get wind readings in the lowest gates. Maxima of wind with the 0230Z (2/9/2009) scan can be seen...just after the initial wind shift, but right under one of the vortices. Actual wind barb value at 340m and 400m AGL was 48 knots for the 0230Z scan. Click on image for full resolution. Credit: Wes Burgett, WTM.

The following plots are from the TTU WISE 200-meter Tower at Reese Center for February 8th, 2008. A). One-hour (1 Hz) station pressure plots at different levels. B). Five-minute (1 Hz) station pressure plots at different levels. C). Temperature/Relative Humidity (1 Hz) data at different levels. D). Horizontal and vertical wind at different levels (data are from u-v-w anemometers). Click on image for full resolution. Credit: Pat Skinner, TTU.

Many West Texas Mesonet stations sampled the line with a few stations under the vortices. Meteograms are in standard time. Click on the thumbnails for a larger image.
