
Severe winds impacted portions of the South Plains and Red River Valley during the late evening hours of July 29th, 2009. Winds exceeding 100 mph hit the Estelline and Childress areas between 10 and 11 pm. A peak gust of 102 mph was recorded at the Childress ASOS station west of town with a peak gust of 80 mph at the Childress 2NNE mesonet station at 10:40 pm. The downburst damage impacted the same area as the 80+ mph winds that hit Childress on June 15th, 2008. Severe winds near 70 mph also impacted the South Plains with a corridor of severe wind reports running southeast from the Clovis area to Snyder. Peak mesonet gust with this cluster of storms was 73 mph at O'Donnell 1N at midnight on the 30th.
