Gravity waves propagating along and ahead of a strong cold front generated three distinct roll clouds over the South Plains around 4am CDT on October 22nd, 2008. The gravity waves/undular bore feature propagated southeast through the Big Country and Concho Valley regions of western Texas during the remainder of the morning hours of October 22nd. The following visible satellite image and radar loop show the feature.

The following link has data from the 200-meter TTU WISE Tower located at Reese Center in western Lubbock County: 200-meter Tower Data. Wind data is from a sonic anemometer and barometer located at the 656 ft level (sampling rate is 30 Hz). All times in CDT. Image courtesy Frank Lombardo, TTU IGERT.

Numerous temperature spikes were recorded in West Texas Mesonet data. Click on the thumbnail for a meteogram from the Olton 6S WTM station (add one hour for daylight savings).

Data from the WTM station located 7 miles northwest of San Angelo. Waves can be seen best ahead of the main frontal passage (between 7-10 am LST).
